Exam Structure

In order to upgrade the skills and proficiency of the young generation and also to provide them awareness to explore about various career options the CBSE has started offering 40 courses at Senior Secondary level. The skill education envisions imparting the procedural knowledge and skills to the students that will enable students to excel and emerge successful in real situation of both work and life.

It works towards imparting an education that is holistic, meaningful and skill oriented which instils among the youth a sense of usefulness and responsibility. You can choose either one or two or three skill subjects from skill electives. You have to choose other elective subjects from academic electives.

Fashion is dynamic and ever changing. It is one of the most powerful forces in our lives. It influences every facet of our lifestyle at a particular period in time e.g. the clothes we wear, the music we listen, the food we eat, where we go for holiday or the car we drive in.

Fashion is a big business and key driver for several industries e.g. apparel, accessories, textiles, automobiles, etc. The purpose of the course ‘Fashion Studies’ is to tell the students about the fundamentals of fashion design. Fashion Design as a profession includes the entire process of designing and producing fashion apparels from the fibre and yarn stage to the finished product.

The course will give an overview of fashion design and elaborate on different aspects like elements of design, history of fashion, fabrics, and understanding of the body, pattern development and garment construction.

Part B: Vocational Skills (60 Marks)

Unit 1: Overview of Fashion

Objectives of the course

  1. To introduce students to Fashion Studies and provide an overview of fashion
  2. To familiarize students with essential fashion terminology and theories
  3. To provide information about fashion designers and brands
  4. To clarify the roles of regulatory bodies and professionals in the garment industry

Learning outcomes

After completion of the unit, the students shall be able to do the following:

  3. Explain the salient characteristics of fashion designers and brands

Unit 2: Introduction to Fabrics, Dyeing & Printing

Objective of the course

  1. To introduce students to natural and manmade fibers
  2. To develop awareness of spinning, weaving, dyeing and printing

Learning outcome

After finishing the course, the students shall be able to do the following:

  1. Identity and differentiate fabric varieties
  2. Explain the various processes of fabric manufacturing, dyeing & printing

Unit 3: Design Fundamentals

Objective of the course

  1. To introduce the students to various aspects of design
  2. To develop familiarity with different Elements of Design and Principles of Design
  3. To develop familiarity with common design terminology
  4. To develop skills of visualization and communication using design principles

Learning outcome

  1. After finishing the course, the students shall be able to do the following:

  5. Translate design concepts to design products

  • Meaning of design
  • Basic Elements of Design – dot, line, shape and texture
  • Color Theory – Hue, tint, shade, tone, color schemes
  • Language and psychology of color
  • Principles of Design – rhythm, balance, proportion, emphasis
  • Silhouette and proportion in apparel

Unit 4: Materials Tools and Processes of Product Making

Objective of the course

  1. To introduce students to the sewing machine
  2. To introduce students with home fashion product categories
  3. To introduce students to leather product categories

Learning outcome

After finishing the course, the students shall be able to do the following:

  1. Develop proficiency in the use of the sewing machine
  2. Differentiate between stitched and unstitched products
  3. Explain categories of leather products
